Past 1,000 metres, the sun has never once reached.
Sunlight is a shallow phenomenon. It fades out gradually, then all at once — and everything below that line has been evolving in permanent darkness for hundreds of millions of years.
The vanishing of colour
Light doesn't switch off underwater — it's filtered out, wavelength by wavelength, like a slow-motion sunset that never ends. Red disappears first, gone by about ten metres, which is why blood looks black to a diver at moderate depth. Orange and yellow follow. By two hundred metres, only a faint, cold blue remains, and by one thousand metres, there is nothing left at all.
This region — beyond roughly a kilometre down — is called the midnight zone, and the name is not poetic exaggeration. It is genuinely, permanently, uninterruptedly dark. No moonlight, no starlight, nothing filters that far. Any light down there is light that something alive made itself.
And that's exactly what happened. Faced with true darkness, deep-sea life didn't just adapt to the absence of light — it began manufacturing its own, in staggering variety.
Bioluminescence: light as a language
An estimated seventy-five to ninety percent of deep-sea animals can produce their own light, through a chemical reaction rather than electricity. It is, by a wide margin, the most common form of communication on the planet — and almost none of us ever see it.
That light does several jobs at once. It lures prey close, the way the anglerfish's glowing filament does. It startles predators with a sudden flash, buying a fraction of a second to escape. Some species use it to camouflage their own silhouette against the faint blue glow filtering down from above, cancelling out their shadow so they simply disappear. Others flash in patterns specific enough to be closer to a signal than a glow — a kind of morse code passed between members of the same species in the dark.
